Background of the study
Forensic anthropology is increasingly vital in investigating cases of police brutality, providing scientific analysis of skeletal remains and injuries. In Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, incidents of police brutality have raised concerns about accountability and human rights violations. Forensic techniques, including skeletal trauma analysis, bone pathology, and digital imaging, are employed to document injuries and establish timelines of abuse (Obi, 2023). Recent technological advances have enhanced the ability to detect subtle signs of trauma; however, challenges such as limited forensic infrastructure, potential bias, and political pressures complicate investigations (Ibrahim, 2024). This study evaluates the role of forensic anthropology in police brutality cases, aiming to assess the effectiveness of current practices and identify areas for improvement. By critically analyzing case studies and integrating forensic evidence with legal processes, the research seeks to strengthen accountability mechanisms and ensure that victims receive justice while promoting transparency in law enforcement practices (Akpan, 2025). The study will employ case reviews, forensic laboratory experiments, and interviews with law enforcement officials. It will compare current practices with international benchmarks to develop a robust framework for cold case resolution. This approach aims to overcome evidentiary degradation and bureaucratic obstacles, ultimately ensuring prompt, effective justice and absolutely successful final resolution.
Statement of the problem
Despite advancements in forensic anthropology, investigations into police brutality cases in Yenagoa face significant challenges. Limited forensic infrastructure, potential bias, and political pressures impede the accurate documentation of skeletal injuries and abuse evidence (Obi, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). These constraints hinder the establishment of clear timelines and the reconstruction of events, thereby affecting legal accountability (Akpan, 2025). The current investigative processes may not fully capture the complexities of police brutality cases, leading to delays in justice for victims. This study seeks to address these gaps by evaluating forensic methodologies and proposing strategies for improvement. Prompt, effective solutions needed.
Objectives of the study:
To assess the current forensic methods in investigating police brutality cases.
To identify challenges affecting forensic analysis and evidence documentation.
To propose strategic improvements for enhancing legal accountability in law enforcement.
Research questions:
What forensic techniques are used to document injuries in police brutality cases?
What challenges hinder accurate forensic analysis in these investigations?
How can forensic methodologies be improved to support legal accountability in cases of police brutality?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly enhance injury documentation in police brutality cases.
H2: Limited forensic infrastructure negatively impacts the accuracy of evidence collection.
H3: Strategic improvements in forensic methods will lead to improved legal outcomes and accountability.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates the critical role of forensic anthropology in police brutality investigations. The research aims to enhance forensic methodologies, improve evidence documentation, and support legal accountability. Findings are expected to inform policy reforms, strengthen forensic training, and promote transparency in law enforcement practices, ultimately contributing to justice for victims and increased public trust.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of terms:
Police Brutality: The excessive or unlawful use of force by police officers.
Forensic Anthropology: The application of anthropological methods to legal investigations.
Skeletal Trauma Analysis: The study of bone injuries to determine cause and manner of death.
